The United Arab Republic (1961-1971) was a continuation of a state that had been created in 1958 by the confederation of Egypt and Syria. After Syria withdrew in 1961 the state continued to exist until 1971, but it had effectively been reduced to Egypt. The state also claimed to represent the All-Palestine Government the successor to the Mandate of Palestine. The authority over Palestine however was de facto limited to the Gaza Strip. In 1971 a new constitution was adopted that changed the official name of the state to the Arab Republic of Egypt
