The Republic of the Congo (1960-1964) was the independent state established to succeede Belgian Congo. Immediately after independence the Congo Crisis () developed and the new state had to contend with secessionist regions, a military coup d'ètat, foreign involvement in its internal affairs by the opposing factions of the Cold War (), an intervention from the United Nations, a constitutional crisis and a rival national government for the Republic of the Congo operating from Stanleyville, in the interior of the country.
